Mujadara consists of cooked lentils together with rice, and garnished with sauté onions, typically seasoned with cumin and black pepper and served warm, chilled, or at room temperature as a side or main dish. It’s a simple, nutritious, and delicious dish.
In a medium skillet, heat the olive oil then add onions and sauté until onions are golden brown. Add lentils and stir for 1 minute. Add 5 cups of water, cover the skillet and leave it on low heat for about 15 minutes.
Drain the rice, add it to the lentils, Add salt, pepper, cumin and stir to mix ingredients. Leave it on high heat uncovered until it begins to boil. Cover the skillet and put it on low heat for 20 minutes until water is evaporated and rice and lentil are cooked. Make sure to stir every 5 minutes.
Put Mujadara on a serving dish, garnish with crispy caramelized onions Strips, and serve warm, chilled, or at room temperature
