Arabic Bread (Pita Bread)

Arabic bread/Pita bread is a staple in Middle Eastern food. This Arabic bread recipe is simple, quick and makes perfect pita bread every time!

Arabic bread can be used for dipping, or to make delicious sandwiches in the pocket. In the Middle East, pita is made in brick ovens, where very high heat can be achieved. It is very hard to duplicate in a home kitchen, but this recipe, combined with high heat comes very close.

 2 cups All-purpose Flour
 2 cups Warm Water
 1 tbsp Sugar
 1 tsp Active Dry Yeast
 1 tsp Salt

Sift the flour in a bowl, add salt and mix well.

Mix active dry yeast, sugar, and warm water. Stir the ingredients until sugar dissolves. Let it rest for 10 minutes.

Make a hole in the middle of the flour then add dissolved yeast. Knead the dough with your hands or a stand mixer, until you have malleable dough of one texture.

Divide the dough into medium balls and cover and let it rest for about an hour or until it has doubled in size.

On a floured counter top, roll out each ball of dough with a rolling pin into circles. Each should be about 5-6 inches across and 1/4 inch thick. Cover and let it rest for about 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 230 °C /450°F.

Brush the oven tray with vegetable oil. Place rolled balls on the tray. Bake for 4 minutes until the dough is puffed up and baked to pale golden. Turnover and bake for 2 minutes.

Remove the bread from oven. Ready to serve. Happy eating!!
